T-Shirt Tuesday - Born to Scrap

Not all scrapbookers are into florals and sweetness. Some are just downright bad to the bone! This T-Shirt Tuesday is dedicated to you!

You may have noticed I was wearing this design on a gray t-shirt in my group picture from my scrapbook retreat a few weeks ago. It got great reviews! Now, I don't really consider myself a true bad to the bone girl, maybe just a wannabe bad to the bone, but I love this shirt!!  :)

So whether you're a bad girl scrapper, or just a wannabe bad girl scrapper (I won't discriminate!), be sure and check out our Born to Scrap apparel!

Alice in Wonderland ATC

Over at Scrapbook.com I'm part of a very fun *critique* group. I say *critique* but typically we just provide friendship and support for one another. If one of us actually finds time to scrapbook or create a project, we know we can count on the others in our little group to offer praise. So the word *critique* is taken with a grain of salt!

Its seems we've all been in a bit of a crafting slump lately, so one of our group, Allie, decided to offer us a challenge. With Alice in Wonderland making its debut a couple of weeks ago, she thought we could make anything (scrapbook layout, altered project, anything!) with that as our central theme. Needless to say, we all jumped on it!

I wanted to share with you my project for the challenge. I'm not a big ATC maker {if you don't know what an ATC is, you can read about them here}. In fact, I've only ever made them once before. But the Alice in Wonderland theme just screamed ATC to me for some reason. So that's what I made!

Note: I used a set of playing cards that I found in the Target $1 spot as the backing for each card (including using the Queen of Hearts for my Red Queen ATC!).

I made 6 ATCs, each using a different character and theme from the Alice in Wonderland story. I used clipart that I shared with you in this blog post. I also used some of my own Alice in Wonderland custom die cuts that I sell in my Etsy store.

This is the first sentence in the book. It really sets the stage for the entire story. I painted the edges of the card with Making Memories paint.

I folded a large purple Prima flower in half to tuck behind the custom die cut. I also inked the petals with brown ink to make it look more realistic. I used pop dots behind the die cut to lift it off of the card, especially since the flower was going to prop it up anyway.

The butterfly is from a set of jewels recently given to me by a friend. I used black Stickles to create the butterfly's "trail."

I printed several clocks from my custom die cut collection (available in my Etsy store) that I resized to fit my card. I placed 3 of these clocks directly on my green and black cardstock.

I printed the white rabbit clipart on a piece of adhesive-backed transparency (found at Hobby Lobby). I placed the transparency on top of the cardstock with the clocks, then placed another clock on top of the transparency.

The pink ribbon is tied in a knot and added just to give a little splash of bright color and tie it in with the other cards.

I painted a playing card with 2 coats of pink Making Memories paint.

I covered the top third of the card with a piece of black cardstock cut at an angle. I covered the cardstock with some mesh scrap fabric.

I took a large chipboard A from BoBunny and covered it with black Stickles. After it was dry I inked the edges with black Staz-on and inked on top of the Stickles in places where the chipboard still showed through.

I made a "is for Alice" on my computer using a fun font and some grid clipart that I made pink and printed that on some white cardstock. I inked the edges with black Staz-on.

I tucked some Alice in Wonderland clipart behind the A and stickled (I just made that a verb) the edges with black Stickles.

I added a pink glitter flower with a black glitter brad to the A and added some more Stickles to the painted portion of the card.

I took a piece of fun tuquoise and green doublesided cardstock and used half of one side for the top and the other side for the bottom. I inked all the edges with turquoise ink.

I used one of my custom die cuts of the Mad Hatter and propped him up with some pop dots. Since the "tea party" was outdoors I added some florals to the bottom of the die cut (a floral chipboard button and some glitter flowers centered with glitter brads).

For the background I took two different patterned cardstocks and covered the seam with red ribbon. I inked the edges with red ink. I stamped some red hearts on the blue cardstock. I also filled in one of the white hearts on the top carstock with red Stickles.

I changed the Red Queen clipart from black to red then printed it on white cardstock and cut her out with my swivel X-acto knife. I added some red Stickles accents to her and propped her up with pop dots. I added the heart jewel. I also added some green teardrop jewels to look as though they were spewing from her mouth.

I stamped "off with her head" with some small alpha stamps then cut it out to look like a banner and added it to the card with pop dots.

I love this quote from the Cheshire Cat. I printed in with brown ink on white cardstock, cut the words out, and inked the edges with brown ink. I added them haphazardly the card.

The rest of the card is simply one of my custom die cuts on some fun plaid patterened scrapbook paper. I felt like the card needed something else so I added a turquoise flower that I folded in half to the back of the card. I also inked the flower petals with brown ink to make them look more interesting.

So that was my entry for the challenge! I thought they turned out pretty fun. The Queen of Hearts was quite popular with one of my friends and is now happily living in a new home. :)

So now my question is... what do I do with the rest of them???

T-Shirt Tuesday - Scrapbook Mentality #109

This week I'm featuring another t-shirt from my favorite collection - Scrapbook Mentality! You may remember, I featured Scrapbook Mentality #374 back in August of last year. Its one of the most popular in this series. Scrapbook Mentality #109 is the newest addition to this collection!

What is a "Scrapbook Mentality"? Scrapbook Mentalities are the reasonings we use as scrapbookers to drool over/purchase/hoard {insert your verb of choice} to have and use all of the supplies that we have in our scrapbook stashes.

Scrapbook Mentality #109 states: "Scrapbook supplies? Why yes! I'll take one of each!" Because really, you can't have too many supplies when it comes to scrapbooking!

Yarn Wreath with Mini Tutorial

I've been trying desperately to come up with an idea for a new wreath for our front door. If you can believe it, our Christmas wreath typically stays up until spring! I just don't have a good *in between* wreath to put up in February or March. Until now!

I love it! Its not season oriented. The colors work for any time of year. Its perfect! Let me tell you how it came to be...

In my search for the perfect *in between* wreath I stumbled across the most amazing Etsy store. I was so completely inspired with the unique wreaths over at KnockKnocking. They are absolutely adorable. And so whimsical! And made most entirely with yarn and felt.

I had an "I could make that!" moment. So I decided to try my hand at making a yarn wreath.

 Materials
styrofoam wreath
fuzzy yarn
(how much yarn you need will depend on the size
of your wreath. Mine took ~60 yds)
felt
ribbon
wood monogram (optional)
spray paint (optional)
beads
(or whatever adhesive you prefer)

1.) Spray paint your wooden letter. I found my letter at Hobby Lobby. I put on 2 coats of brown spray paint as well as a clear protection coat since it will be outdoors.

2.) Tie your ribbon that you will use to hang the wreath around the styrofoam. This way it will be hidden when you started wrapping the wreath with yarn. Alternatively you can wrap the ribbon later if you want it to show over the yarn.

3.) Now you're ready to start wrapping the yarn around the styrofoam frame. I worked with ~2 yards of yarn at a time so it would not get tangled up. Place a small line of adhesive on the styrofoam in the direction you will be wrapping the wreath. Place the end of your yarn in the adhesive and give it a few seconds to start to dry (that's all it takes with the Beacon adhesive! its great stuff!). Start wrapping the wreath with the yarn. Try not pull the yarn too tightly but snug enough so that it does not hanging limply from the wreath. You want the yarn to keep its fluffiness! Each time you wrap, push the sides together so they are snug against each other and you cannot see the styrofoam between the strands of yarn. It can be tedious, but I did all my wrapping while sitting front of the tv.

4.) To attach the wooden letter to the wreath, I wrapped some coordinated ribbon around the top of the letter and adhered the other end to the stryofoam under the yarn. This is probably not the best way to do this. You probably will want to do this step before you wrap the wreath with yarn. {Learn from my mistake!}

5.) Make (or purchase) some felt flowers in colors matching those in your yarn. I went with a blueish turquoise, dark brown, cream, and caramel brown. I added beads to some of the flowers to make them stand out more.

6.) Nestle the flowers into one of the bottom corners of your wreath. I laid all the flowers out where I thought I wanted them to go before glueing them down.

7.) Add any other accents to the wreath as you see fit. I added a brown bow and a butterfly charm to finish my look.

8.) Scotchgard is your friend!! Since your wreath will be outdoors it would be a good idea to add a couple of coats just to prevent any possible staining.

More gratuitous shots of the felt flowers:

All in all this was a pretty inexpensive project. The yarn cost me the most at ~$6. Even better if you can catch it while its on sale. I got too excited to wait!

One last photo of the wreath:

*sigh* I just love it!
