BML Guest Post - Kristen from Life with the Ellwoods

Spring has officially sprung. The flowers may not be really blooming yet, but the itch for Spring has truly set in.

For those of you who don't know me, I'm Kristen from Life with the Ellwoods. I'm a young gal born and raised in Texas. I've been with the love of my life for over 5 years and we've been married for just about 2 years. We love working on our house and about 5 months ago I was bitten by the craft bug.

As I was saying, I'm itching for Spring. I am longing for warm, sunny days, the smell of grass, working in the yard, and getting some color in my cheeks.

In order to get my home looking more like Spring and less like Winter I decided to create a few Subway art printables for my 8x10 frames. I just love how just a simple printed document can add so much flavor to a tabletop or wall! To download the documents click on the images below.

The first one has various shades of green and a few pops of orange.
The second one has various shades of green with a yellow border and several Scripture verses.
As I was making these my urge to let the light in and brighten things up in our home grew. I'm having visions of bright greens and yellows, oranges and blues, baskets and eggs, flowers and candy. More Spring projects to come, so head over to my blog, Life with the Ellwoods, to get the latest!

BML Guest Post - Leigh from The Sewing Diva

Hi Everyone, I’m Leigh from The Sewing Diva (and her reluctant models). I’m a 31 year old disabled mum of one very active four year old boy and married for 8 years this April. I’ve tried most crafts over the years, some with more success than others!! Currently I’m doing a lot of sewing and learning patchwork and quilting at college and teaching myself dressmaking from the internet and books. Recently I’ve also started doing a lot of cookie decorating and making cookie bouquets.

Here are some of the things I have featured on my blog lately:

This is what I’m going to be talking about how to make today:
Waterproof backed picnic blanket.

I’m afraid this was made pre blog so I don’t have any step by step pictures but it’s a pretty simple make so I’m sure I can explain it ok.  The reason I love this blanket so much is because it gave me a use for one of Sam’s old baby blankets that I couldn’t bear to part with, yes I know I’m a sentimental old fool!! Oh and because it cost me the grand total of £1 to make! Cheapskate? Me???

So for this make you will need:
  1. Old baby blanket or fleece blanket. This one is about 1m by 1.5 m
  2. Plastic coated fabric tablecloth (I got this one from poundland for £1) or piece of oilcloth
  3. Ribbon for tying when rolled
  4. Sewing machine (or needle and thread to hand sew)
To make:
  1. Cut the tablecloth to the same size as the blanket.
  2. Using the offcuts cut out the  child’s name and applique onto the face of the blanket using a short zig zag stitch.
  3. Place tablecloth and blanket right sides together.
  4. Cut two pieces of ribbon approximately 3ft long. Fold each piece in half and tuck inbetween your blanket and tablecloth on one of the short sides with the fold poking out a little to ensure it will get caught in the stitching when you stitch the blanket and tablecloth together.
  5. Stitch around all 4 sides leaving a gap to turn. Turn right side out and slipstitch the turning gap closed. If doing it again I would probably top stitch around all 4 sides at this point.
So that’s it! Told you it was simple. So now you just roll up and tie with the ribbon and you are ready to go. It’s flexible enough to fit in the basket under a child’s pushchair or the two lots of ties mean it will also fit over the handles. It’s machine washable on a cool cycle and stops soggy bottom syndrome when you sit on a patch of grass that you thought was dry until it was too late!

So I hope you liked my blanket, do come over and visit me at my blog!

Monogram Sign

When Who+What{Logos} contacted me about using on of their custom logos in one of my craft projects I was pretty excited. I knew right away I wanted a monogram.

I might have an obsession with monograms!

Its amazing how you can dress something up with just a monogram!

I chose the Formality logo with a simple M from the Who+What{Logos} collection.

Let's get started on how my monogram sign came to be.

This pallet has been living in my backyard for quite a while, and I decided it was high time to put the wood to good use.

I had my husband pry some strips of wood from the pallet and cut them down to size.
 Each strip measures 16" long.

We used some wood glue to adhere the four strips together, and then my helpful husband attached a couple of more pieces of wood to the back and screwed them on for extra support.

The final dimension of the sign is now 16" x 12".

Once the glue was dry, I put on two coats of Valspar chalkboard paint.

I used my Silhouette machine to cut the logo onto white vinyl.

Because of the size of my sign I had to separate the logo into
3 pieces in order for my machine to cut it:
The top scroll, bottom scroll, and the monogram itself.

I was able to easily piece back together the original monogram design and attached the vinyl to the sign.

Since I used chalkboard paint on the sign, I added a little something to the bottom corner with a piece of chalk. My husband and I married in 2003 so I added a simple "EST. 2003" (to be interpreted as Established in 2003).

I love how it turned out! So classic and it will look great anywhere in my house!

This is far from the end of my use of this logo.
I have several more craft projects I plan to use it for!

Disclaimer: Who+What{Logos} offered me a free logo of my choice in exchange for using it in a craft project to share on their blog.

Sneak Peeks & Random Baby Stuff

Happy Saturday, y'all!

I thought I would share some sneak peeks of my little guy's new big boy room and a little project in the nursery.

The big boy room has been in the works for what seems like forever. Our spare room got a HUGE makeover to make it the perfect space for my toddler. With the hubs only home for 1 week/per month from November-March, it took quite a while to get everything complete.

(secret: its still not complete complete. I have a few more touches to add to it!)

Can you guess the theme?
You'll definitely get it right if you remember the theme of his 2nd birthday!

Fun artwork display.

We kept the jungle theme in our nursery. But our lamp got a big makeover...

Both of these rooms will have their full reveals later this summer!

In other random baby news...
I feel like I'm ready to pop! And I'm pretty sure this baby is ready to be free of my belly. He stretches and pushes and tries desperately to make more room. But I'm short, and there's just nowhere for the little guy to go!

But I think we finally have everything in the house ready to welcome our new bundle of joy (nothing like waiting until the last minute!).

Speaking of welcoming a new bundle of joy...
I received this super adorable card from my friend Carol at The Answer is Chocolate last week! What a great surprise in my mailbox! Carol makes the MOST amazing things with paper including cards, banners, and altered projects among other things. You should definitely go visit her blog!

We're hoping to welcome our latest addition first thing Monday morning. Please keep us in our thoughts!

I have one last project to share with you tomorrow then I have some great guest bloggers lined up for the next month or so to take over the blog (I'll sneak in some baby pics in between!).

I hope you'll all welcome my guests and leave them some great comments! They are seriously helping me out while I spend some time with my new little guy.  :)

Some Fun Stuff!

I wanted to share some fun things around blogland with you today!

First up, something very local:

I don't know if you've noticed, but I am a mere 5 followers away from 1000 on Google Friend Connect! Wooooooohooooooo!!!

I made an announcement on Facebook (if you don't follow me there, you really should!) that if I could reach 1000 blog followers before I start my maternity leave on Monday we would have a big party when I come back this summer!

So, any stalkers out there? Go ahead and follow, please!

Secondly:

I'm sure you've heard about it, but Canvas Corp is having a big banner making contest this month.

And I think we all know how I feel about banners. I've made a few...  ;)

And they've recently changed the rules opening the contest up to ALL banners! (Previously you had to include at least 3 Canvas Corp products.) So you can bet your booty I'm entering! The winner receives over $100 worth of Canvas Corp product!

You can get more information here. But hurry! The contest is only open until the 31st!

And third:

Amanda at Serenity Now has been hosting a fun new link party the last couple of months.
Serenity Now Crafty Cutter Party
You can link up projects you've made using your Silhouette, Cricut, or Slice. Fun!

I've linked up the last two months. Its so fun to see what others are making with their die cut machines!

If you want to link up this month, hurry! The party for ends on Friday.

Fun stuff, right?
I thought so, too!

So, in summary:
1. follow my blog
2. make a fun banner and enter it into the Canvas Corp contest
3. link up those fun die cut machine projects to Serenity Now

Vinyl Knob Tutorial - 3 Techniques

I finally have the vinyl knob tutorial for you, and since I made you wait so long, I've made it worth your while with 3 different techniques to try!

Let's get started!

First, I purchased 3 wooden knobs at Lowe's for less than $1 each.

I spray painted each knob a different color so I could try some different looks.

These are all spray paints we had in our "stash" of paint. I have to tell you, I'm loving the Rustoleum Aluminum! Its so bright and shiny that the knob really looks like it started out as metal!

To figure out sizing for my vinyl I measured the diameter of my knobs.

I chose my images for the knobs by perusing my Silhouette library. I ended up with
bloom_C00021_23851
Damask_0852
round_spanish_lace_C00182_20387

I sized them down in the software...

And used some scrap vinyl to cut them out.

The bloom and spanish lace designs needed the removal of a lot of small pieces of vinyl. I've found the easiest way to do this is to (1) use something pointed to (2) push the the small piece of vinyl out of the way and (3) remove it from the image. It can actually go quite quickly once you get the hang of it!

Once the images have all extra vinyl removed, cover them with transfer paper and rub it on thoroughly.

Let's start with the bloom design. I wanted to put it on the Blue Ocean Breeze knob.

1. This is simply showing you the vinyl on the transfer paper.
2. I find that using a design that is round and the same size as my knob, it is easier to remove the image from the transfer paper and place it on by hand (alternatively you could trim around the image as close as possible to line it up on the knob).
3. I eyeballed the bloom image on the knob.
4. Once I thought I had it centered, I lightly placed it on the knob.
5. When I was sure it was centered, I proceeded to stick the vinyl down with my finger working from the center of the knob out.
6. Because the knob itself is not perfectly flat, the design will not lay flat. I was able to smooth it down in all but one place.

Here's how to remedy the bump in the image:
7. Get a pair of sharp small tip scissors.
8. Carefully cut across middle of the bloom of the flower.
9. Smooth down one side of the vinyl you just cut, then smooth down the other side. There will be a slight overlap.
10. Looking down at the knob you can't see where the cut was made!
11. Recover the knob with the transfer paper and rub well to be sure the vinyl is well attached to the knob.
12-13. Now admire your work!

I really like the shine that the knob has and the vinyl had too much of a matte look. So I added a couple of coats of Mod Podge across the top of the knob giving the vinyl a more shiny look and blending in better with the blue paint.

On to the next knob!

I know what you're thinking with this black knob....

Why put black vinyl on a black knob?

Answer: To use it as a stencil template!

1. Smooth the vinyl on just as we did with the blue knob. There are many more puckers in this design when I smooth it down.
2-3. Trim the puckers as advised above and smooth down the vinyl.
4. I decided to use some scrapbook ink and dabbed a couple of coats all over the top of the stencil.
5. Remove the stencil once the ink is dry. I love the shabby chic look of the vinyl stencil. I think sanding the edges of the knob will finish off the look.

For the silver knob I chose to use the damask pattern.

1. Trim the image as much as possible.
2. Center the image on the knob and rub it on thoroughly.
3-4. Remove the transfer paper and admire your work!

And there you have it!
3 different looks for 1 wooden knob. And, really, the possibilities are endless!

For less than a dollar, you can customize a knob to suit your fancy.

I hope the next time you go on the hunt for the perfect knob for your big project you think about trying out a little vinyl!

I think I'll use these to make a jewelry holder... How eclectic and cute would that be?  :)
