Meal Plan Part 2 - Menu Board/Pantry Door Makeover

I was determined to get a meal plan organized for my household before my maternity leave came to an end. With a toddler to include in mealtime and a baby to distract from mealtime, I felt it was important to have an organized method to go about getting us all fed a decent meal each night. No more coming home and saying, "What's for dinner??"

I am happy to say that our meal plan did indeed get implemented just before my leave came to an end and it has been working great for several weeks now! It makes cooking and grocery shopping alike so much easier!

I'm going to present our meal plan to you in 3 parts.

You can find Part 1 here: Recipe Book.

This is part 2!

Now that our new meal plan was being implemented we needed somewhere to write down what was for dinner for the week. I'd been itching to put some chalkboard paint (I have a slight addiction to the stuff) on the pantry/laundry room doors. They are those cheap-ish fakey wood doors with the fakey wood-grain texture. The chalkboard paint probably wouldn't have been great there, but I wasn't sure what else to do.

Enter an especially beneficial trip to JoAnn's!

I found the most amazing adhesive-back dry erase sheets!

AND they matched my kitchen!

AND I had a 40% off coupon. ;)

Now my doors have a fabulous makeover!

Isn't it pretty? Its a great floral and flourish motif.

And the green matches the walls in my kitchen perfectly. :)

The dry erase sheets were a cinch to use. There were two large sheets (I only used 1 for both doors!) in the roll. I simply measured the inside panels on my doors then transferred those measurements onto the dry erase sheet and started cutting. Easy peasy!

Too get the sheets onto the door I simply unpeeled a little bit of the backing at a time starting at the top so I could get all the corners nice and lined up. I used a roller as I went to make sure I didn't get any bubbles. And if I did happen to get a bubble, it was simple to just peel a corner of the sheet up and smooth it down again.

When I bought these dry erase sheets I thought they were white and green, but actually the only color on them is the green. The rest is clear. So whatever color wall, door, or whatever that you put them on will come through. So for my doors, it also means the wood grain white comes through which I really kind of like!

I really can't get enough of how well my new pantry doors look! I feel super proud of myself every time I walk by them.

And, of course, we now have the perfect place to write our weekly menu!

I also use the doors for reminders and other notes. And, best of all, when we have company they can be wiped clean and no one is the wiser to what my fabulous new door decor really is! ;)

And now I have a slight conundrum for you. I've thought about trimming the door with some fabulous black ribbon I picked up. Just to polish the edges of the dry erase sheets a bit.

What do you think? It would be simple to add...

Here's a mock up of what it would look like (I just drew some lines on the photo).

Yay or nay?

Keep in mind that I have some uber fabulous vintage black porcelain doorknobs to add to the doors and that my major decor in the kitchen is black and white with green thrown in.

Next week I'll share Part 3, the final part of the meal plan where I put all of the pieces together for you!

Chalkboard Labels

Last weekend I got a little wild when
I got my hands on some of this:

And my kitchen ended up looking like this:

I went a little bit label crazy!

I've been wanting to get my utility room organized because it also doubles as my panty.
(Yeah, my kitchen has no pantry. Such a rip off!)

Chalkboard paint seemed like a great idea to help me get organized! I had bought some cute green totes at Walmart to store items in as well as some green plastic containers. I felt the urge to label them with the chalkboard paint. While I was at it, I decided to label my black canisters, too!

I just taped off where I wanted to paint and got busy spreading the chalkboard love.

The canisters and plastic containers took 2 coats of paint.

I didn't want to paint directly on my new totes, so I grabbed some stashed cardboard (Hey, I'm a scrapbooker. I hoard all things paper!) and cut it up into the size I wanted my labels. It only took one coat of paint on the cardboard! Then I punched a hole in it with my Crop-a-dile and tied it to the totes with some ribbon.

Easy peasy!

Cheap, cute labels and there is still a TON of paint left.

I love this way of labeling with the chalkboard paint and cardboard. I see more labels in my future!

And, for the record, nothing is safe in my house from this paint!

Social Saturday - Death of the RSVP

This last week has been, in a word, blech.
Between a small oven fire, playing the role of single parent for 3 nights straight to a baby and potty training toddler, and other things that would probably just gross you out...

Let's just say I'm glad its the weekend and am looking forward to getting a few projects done for my 3 year old's birthday party next weekend!

Speaking of birthday parties (or baby showers or any kind of party for that matter)...
What has happened to the RSVP?

I sent out birthday invites a few weeks ago and requested everyone RSVP by tomorrow. I have heard of a grand total of 4 people! And I can guarantee you that I won't hear from anyone else (unless they read this blog post) tomorrow. It seems the RSVP has gone by the way side.

Unfortunately its like this every year for our birthday parties, but I've also experienced it for other events I've helped throw for others. Do people no longer feel obligated to RSVP even if its requested? I do. Am I alone in that?

I'm curious what you think! Do you RSVP? If not, why not?

Maybe next year I'll request regrets only.
And if someone doesn't show up and never lets me know they weren't coming I'll send them a bill for their share of the food. ;)

On to some FUN things!

Last weekend's blogger meetup was fun and full of helpful information, as per usual!
Gina at The Shabby Creek Cottage did a great write up of our get together if you're so inclined to head over there and read it.

In case you missed it on my Facbook page, I shared some fun Halloween finds from a trip to Home Goods this last week. Be sure to check it out!

Also, thanks to my friend Angie, I discovered the cutest Etsy shop recently, 58 & Grace!
Whitney, the shop owner is super sweet and is helping make my son's train-themed party next weekend even more fun.

In looking around 58 & Grace (which is full of some seriously yummy vintage goodies), I noticed Whitney had recently sold some vintage train tickets. But she didn't appear to have any more in stock. I convo'd her to see if perhaps there might be more laying around and she promptly wrote me back that she dug around and found a few more for me! Yay!

Aren't they great! (And don't you love how Whitney wrapped them up?)

I can't wait to incorporate them into our train decor!

Thanks, Whitney!!

Okay, I really need to get back to party planning. Have a great weekend, y'all!

Meal Plan Part 1 - Recipe Book

I was determined to get a meal plan organized for my household before my maternity leave came to an end. With a toddler to include in mealtime and a baby to distract from mealtime, I felt it was important to have an organized method to go about getting us all fed a decent meal each night. No more coming home and saying, "What's for dinner??"

I am happy to say that our meal plan did indeed get implemented just before my leave came to an end and it has been working great for several weeks now! It makes cooking and grocery shopping alike so much easier!

I'm going to present our meal plan to you in 3 parts.

This is part 1!

It seemed like we were always cooking the same old thing. One of the main reasons for this is that we cooked things that we knew from heart. It was too much trouble to go digging through a ton of recipe books to find things to make just to make up the grocery list. Who has that kind of time?

So I decided to make my own recipe book so that all of our favorite meals that we don't have memorized are all in the same place and thus easy to find.

(This recipe book was inspired by Amy's version at Postiviely Splendid!)

I started with a blank chipboard album (from 7gypies).

I covered it front and back with scrapbook paper that would match my kitchen decor.
(All scrapbook paper was adhered to the album with Mod Podge.)

I wanted to dress it up a little so I made little tag using scrapbook paper and alphabet stickers. I sealed it with Mod Podge. The jewels are from Teresa Collins. I like the extra bling! Both the tag and bling are attached to the album by some scrap fabric that I tied around the front cover of the recipe album.

I also threaded some sheer black ribbon through the binding to help mask where scrapbook paper ended.

Inside I added more scrapbook paper to the pages of the album. I made my own recipe cards to put in the book.

I used clear corner tabs to keep the recipe cards in the albums.

This works great for two reasons. 1) If a recipe takes up more room than the front of the card will allow, I can write on the back and easily take the card out of the album to read the extra directions. And 2) I might find a recipe I like better and replace the one I currently have. Its happened before!

You may have noticed that my recipes are tabbed. They correspond to a master list of meals that I will share with you later in the meal planning process.

So that is my new recipe book!

Not only is it cute and functional for our meal planning, but the album acts as its own easel so I can easily put it anywhere on the kitchen counter and read the cooking directions!

Part 2 of the meal plan is coming next week. And its my FAVORITE part!
I can't wait to share it with you!

Quick Purse Makeover

Originally posted May 6, 2010
~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~

I actually did this purse makeover a couple a months ago for a fun spring change up.

I.love.this.purse.

I love the length of the shoulder strap.

I love the black and tan colors together (goes with everything).

I love the gathered fabric on the front.

BUT it needed something when spring rolled around.

So I raided my fabric stash and made a fun layered flower to dress my purse up.

I made it a pin so I can take it on and off easily. I can also use it to dress up a denim jacket or t-shirt.

Now this is absolutely my favorite purse!

I love that something so simple can make such a big difference!
